Web 2.0
First generation websites used content, design and code to create online entities to provide information.
Web 2.0 refers to the next generation of sites that raise the bar, combining the elements above with functionality to enable interactivity, information sharing, communication and collaboration.
Increasingly, sites are focusing user centered design to facilitate participation. Social networks, blogs, wikis and content sharing site are becoming progressively popular.
Content syndication, RSS feeds, embedded video links, mash-ups are examples of methods used to incorporate content from other web entities to keep sites fresh, relevant and up-to-date. For example, instead of creating their own gallery, sites may choose to “plug in” existing galleries from sites that have created APIs (Application Programming Interface) to enable this.
Features that boost interactivity, communication and collaboration include content upload tools, forums, polls, blogs, comments, rating, maps, profiling, tagging, translations and localization. And with the exponential increase in mobile devices, having mobile versions of sites has become essential for some websites.
The Web 2.0 design movement has involved the use of elements such as rounded corners, gradients, glassy, reflective and transparent effects as well as detailed iconography.
